Animal Save Movement  collaborates with A.F.A.R          #FOFOUSA

The Animal Save Movement started in December 2010 with the inception of Toronto Pig Save after I adopted Mr. Bean, a dog. On our morning walks, we witnessed sad and frightened pigs en route to a nearby slaughterhouse in downtown Toronto. Six months later, we made a promise to the pigs to hold a minimum of three animal vigils each week to bear witness. We use a love-based approach to community organizing informed by Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi. The aim is to hold an animal vigil at every slaughterhouse.Through the power of communities not looking away from animal suffering but coming close and trying help we can close all slaughterhouses and build an eco-friendly vegan world.

Animal Save Movement

Organization’s history

In 2016, Save launched Animal Save Tours to build a global movement. By 2019, there were 900 chapters in over 70 countries. Find a list and map of Animal Save chapters by country.

Beginning in 2018, the Save Movement expanded to include three branches: Animal Save, Climate Save and Health Save. We evolved from a largely single tactic organization holding animal vigils to a campaign oriented movement with multiple, escalating tactics based on the book This is an Uprising.

mission statement

PROVIDE HEALTHY VEGAN FOOD FOR EVERYONE
As not only adequate but beneficial for health and preventive of those diseases that harm us the most, access to a whole-foods vegan diet should be granted by our government. We demand the community, the government and the private sector make healthy vegan foods physically available and affordable everywhere.

WE DEMAND INDIVIDUAL AND SYSTEM CHANGE
We demand individuals, governments, corporations and other institutions end animal agriculture and fishing by 2030 and transition to a just, vegan food system and reforest the Earth.

The demands of the three branches of Animal Save Movement (Animal, Climate and Health) for a transition towards a fair and livable planet complement each other.

We are working towards creating a support system for slaughterhouse workers and animal farmers as workers change their job or their business to organic plant-based farming. This is fundamental for the growth of the animal and climate justice movements and for the social revolution we so much need.

We demand that individuals fight climate change with diet change. Equally we demand a transition to a plant based food system now. Governments, corporations and communities act now to stop greenhouse gas emissions, harmful land use and deforestation caused by animal agriculture and end the unspeakable exploitation and suffering of farmed animals, wildlife and climate refugees.

Schools, restaurants, hospitals and other institutions need to veganize[4]  their menus to facilitate this food system change, not just for the animals and the climate, but also for the school children’s health and the health of the society.

actions

BEAR WITNESS

End the mass disconnection by shining a light on the animals who are exploited and suffer in darkness. Everyone has the responsibility to bear witness and act to stop this catastrophe.

We demand that everyone adheres to their duty to bear witness and change the cultural norm so that looking away is not socially acceptable but coming close and trying to help is the moral imperative.

Animal Save Movement and Slaughter Free Cities[2]  [3] are not asking for better slaughterhouses; we are demanding they be closed.

TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT ANIMAL AGRICULTURE

Everyone needs to focus on animal agriculture as the leading contributor to climate chaos, deforestation, mass extinction, ocean dead zones, water use and pollution and numerous environmental tipping points. Communicate the urgency for change and how a necessary part of the solution lies in switching to a plant based food system and reforesting the earth. Methane, produced by ruminants, has a short half life (of 8 years according to the IPCC) compared to carbon dioxide (100 years) and tackling this gas is essential to prevent a spiraling climate crisis. Reforestation can be made possible

All three branches of the Animal Save Movement (Animal, Climate and Health) place a focus on the individuality of the animals.

Animals are persons, not property.

Animal vigils center the focus on animals while climate and health campaigns help focus on the need for #FoodSystemChangeNow.

Actions are often hosted by all three branches to complement each of the branch’s work and to highlight the many co-benefits of going vegan.
